History of Moores

Moores have been trading in Dunstable since 1908. Charles and Alice Moore came to Dunstable from Woburn Sands and opened a shop at 271 High St North. In 1917 they moved to number 21 (then 11) which was called Paris House. These premises were built in the late 1500's and when alterations were undertaken by Charles and Alice's son Fred, stones were found which were taken from the Priory, after the dissolution of the monasteries.

Fred and his wife, May, came into the business in 1943 when Charles and Alice became too ill to carry on running Moores.

In 1959 extensive alterations became necessary because the 400 year old building had started to crumble (the pictures are taken just before alterations).

Then in 1966 the premises next door, which has been occupied by Boots for many years, became vacant when they moved to the newly built Quadrant. This allowed extensive expansion of the business.

In the 1960's Fred and May's daughter, Pauline came into the business, eventually becoming a partner and is now in sole charge of running the store.
